The Time Complexity of Constraint Satisfaction
نویسنده
چکیده
We study the time complexity of (d, k)-CSP, the problem of deciding satisfiability of a constraint system C with n variables, domain size d, and at most k variables per constraint. We are interested in the question how the domain size d influences the complexity of deciding satisfiability. We show, assuming the Exponential Time Hypothesis, that two special cases, namely (d, 2)-CSP with bounded variable frequency and d-UNIQUE-CSP, already require exponential time Ω(dc·n) for some c > 0 independent of d. UNIQUE-CSP is the special case for which it is guaranteed that every input constraint system has at most 1 satisfying assignment.

Improving Success Ratio in Multi-Constraint Quality of Service Routing
Multi-constraint quality-of-service routing will become increasingly important as the Internet evolves to support real-time services. It is well known however, that optimum multi-constraint QoS routing is computationally complex, and for this reason various heuristics have been proposed for routing in practical situations. Among these methods, those that use a single mixed metric are the mo...
متن کاملOn the Subexponential Time Complexity of CSP
Not all NP-complete problems share the same practical hardness with respect to exact computation. Whereas some NP-complete problems are amenable to efficient computational methods, others are yet to show any such sign. It becomes a major challenge to develop a theoretical framework that is more fine-grained than the theory of NP-completeness, and that can explain the distinction between the exa...
متن کاملThe Complexity of Temporal Constraint Languages
A temporal constraint language is a set of relations that has a first-order definition in (Q, <), the dense linear order of the rational numbers. We present a complete complexity classification of the constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) for temporal constraint languages: if the constraint language is contained in one out of nine temporal constraint languages, then the CSP can be solved in pol...
متن کاملThe Complexity of Constraint Satisfaction Problems∗
The tractability conjecture for constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) describes the constraint languages over a finite domain whose CSP can be solved in polynomial-time. The precise formulation of the conjecture uses basic notions from universal algebra. In this talk, we give a short introduction to the universal-algebraic approach to the study of the complexity of CSPs. Finally, we discuss a...
متن کاملOn approximating CSP-B
We prove that any constraint satisfaction problem where each variable appears a bounded number of times admits a nontrivial polynomial time approximation algorithm.
متن کاملComplexity of several constraint satisfaction problems using the heuristic, classical, algorithm, WalkSAT
We determine the complexity of several constraint-satisfaction problems using the heuristic algorithm WalkSAT. At large sizes N, the complexity increases exponentially with N in all cases. Perhaps surprisingly, out of all the models studied, the hardest for WalkSAT is the one for which there is a polynomial time algorithm.
